Health Care Work Place Violence

Vontresa Blog: 5
There are many ways that work place violence can occur. Often time’s workers do not see the violence coming until it is upon them. People often look at work place violence as someone coming from the outside into the inside and committing a crime against workers. Violence often occurs on those who are providing direct care such as; nurses, certified nurse’s assistants and the orderlies.  There are few times when those in administrations faces the threats those who are providing direct care faces. Yes, there are times when workers are upset with human resources or ex co-workers are retaliating against a former boss. Over half of these workers that provide direct care has came into contact with some type of violence. There are times when family members feel as though their love one have not been treated properly such as in the case with my Grandmother that causes one to latch out in frustration yet it is violent. The U. S Department of Justice stated that workplace seems to be the fastest growing violence in our country.

Most violence occurs in healthcare settings and social services industries because these industries deal with people livelihood. It is good for the workers in these environments to have been adequate trained to help deter some of this violence that occurs. I have a friend up North who encountered a violent patient in the hospital that left her severely injured and fighting for her life. I often tell her that she had a lot to do with it because she does not hold back on what she says. A patient got angry with her because he said she was not gentle in giving him his shot. She stated that he should be thankful that he received a shot ad before she could turn around he was all over her. It took a while for the doctors and nurses to realize what was happening to her. Since then, if a patient is upset or seems upset, security has to stand outside the door. But that was a little too late for her, yet, it could save the life of someone else.

I speak on this because as a Public Administrator we will come into contact with all types of people and especially with working with those who are mentally challenge. Working in the Emergency Room and coming into contact with all types of people it is very wise to stay observant even with co-workers who maybe overworked and is always complaining about how stressed out they are. Nothing should be taking for granted because the life one save maybe his/her own along with many more.

My Experience with the Affordable Healthcare Act!!!

My Experience with the Affordable Healthcare Act!!!

Vontresa Blog: 4
So much have been said surrounding the Affordable Healthcare Plan since it has been signed into act. So many people are confused, left with no understanding and some do not care to understand at all. I want to talk about my experience when I signed up for it.

Ok, this is what took place. I went to the main webpage to sign up and that experience went real well. I was shock because in the past, I was kicked off line or was shown a message that the webpage was down. I proceeded to input my information and answer all the questions it asked about my finances, people who live in my household and who all I was applying for. At one time in there it froze up on me when I only requested insurance for myself. It kept asking me about my other household members. We finally got around that and proceeded on. I finally made it to the end and was looking forward to seeing what kind of plans that I would be offered and how much they would cause.  There was nothing. I was told that I would be contacted by whatever option I choose through mail or email. I was like, are you serious? This has got to be a joke. I am still laughing and waiting for that email.

Now do not get me wrong, I do not believe that I will be overlooked, I just thought that I would be able to have my choices right then and there before me. I read that others had similar situations happen to them. It feels good to know that I was not the only one. I somewhat understands.

Medicare in the Elderly

Blog 3: Medicare in the Elderly
Vontresa Blog 3:
As a person who loves to help less fortunate people or people that are not aware of charity programs in the healthcare filed my heartfelt passion are for and to the children and elderly in this world. As a Social Worker/ Public Administrator, I try to stay abreast on the different types of healthcare programs and what they have to offer all people. At the beginning of this year my Grandmother/ Matriarch of our family was suddenly diagnose with congestive heart failure. We as a family were giving very few choices on what we could do or our options. We were treated as though the questions we ask we were crazy. My Grandfather had passed years ago and had provided for our family, especially my grandmother and left her comfortable. All of their children have excellent jobs and makes great money. My grandmother had one of those Medicare plans to supplement her health insurance. She had been in the hospital off and on without a proper diagnose over the years. Finally one of her daughters that live in Atlanta and works for a well known hospital diagnose her with been over medicated. When she fell sick the very last and final time she had exhausted all of her healthcare and it seems as though the family cash was no good. The doctors gave up and within a week she had passed.

OK, I said all of that to say, once the main health insurance had ran out and Medicare had been exhausted, it seemed as though the doctors nor the hospital cared that this was someone family member. Oh yes, I spoke up loud and made sure that my voice was heard during the whole process. It is sad when Medicare have a grace period that a person can reach and be cut off. I was so shocked. Once that grace period has been reached, the hospital will send the patient home with a bogus excuse and plenty of numbing medication to expire on. This has been seen all over the world and some hospital have been sued due to neglect and negligent.

As a Public Administrator, it is good to be aware of the Medicare as well as the Medicaid rules. Knowledge is the key to understanding. Although Medicare has no lifetime limit benefits, there is a benefit period in which my Grandmother encountered. Be aware.

Scrutiny of Non Profit Organizations

Scrutiny of Nonprofit Organizations
Vontresa Blog 2:
As I looked more into what Public Administration entail, I am shocked to see how closely related it is to Social Work. With my undergrad in social Work and what lead me into that field, I can see why I was geared into the area of Public Administration. I do not only have a desired to help people but more so a group of people that are often overlooked.  I read where Public Administrators are sometimes guardians over citizens that do not have family and they are faced with challenging disabilities. So in other word, Public Administrators have to be their voice and they have to speak and make sure they are heard. This could be challenging when there are people who feel as though certain people should not be seen or heard.

Ok, I said that to say that there are special people that may need special help and as a Social Worker/Public Administrator there can be some tough challenges in the healthcare field that I or someone else may be up against. I was looking into how non-profit hospitals are suppose to be a pillar in their community to help people that does not have health insurance, mentally challenge or that have insurance that does not cover all of their medical expenses. These non-profit hospital are exempted from paying taxes because they are suppose to met a standard with providing indigent to those unfortunate ones that cannot afford the medical bills.

As a Public Administrator, I would love to be involved with making sure that All non-profit hospital are satisfying those requirements that the Affordable Care Act  (ACT) requires. There have been in the past and even occurring now that All non-profit hospitals are not meeting the requirements. Once this discovery was made, all non-profit hospital has to provide every three years a community health need assessment (CHNA). This action is supposed to demonstrate that the hospitals are meeting the needs of the patient community they serve. Under the ACA financial assistance are availability for those that are eligible, and that the correct amount is charge to patients. As a Public Administrator it is very important for me to understand these requirements and to make sure that the patients are been treated fairly and receiving theses services. A question that can be asked, “Are Hospitals Informing Patients About Charity Care Programs?” Most are stressing patients out over their medical bills. This could be one of the best kept secrets if one does not know.

Alternative or Complementary Medicine

                    Alternative or Complementary Medicine

 Vontresa Blog 1:
I have been reading and trying for some time to try to understand the Affordable Health Care Act. I have been trying to understand where I fit in with this plan. After consulting with several of my elderly family members, I have learned to deal with many health issues through home remedies. Many of those home remedies really do work. I look at some home remedies as alternative or what is sometimes referred to as complementary medicines medicine. The definition of complementary or alternative medicine means:  Many Americans, nearly 40 percent, use health care approaches developed outside of mainstream Western, or conventional, medicine for specific conditions or overall well-being. When describing health approaches with non-mainstream roots, people often use the words “alternative” and “complementary” interchangeably, but the two terms refer to different concepts:  There are many people who do not believe in pumping their bodies with all these different types of experimental drugs that are wrecking our bodies with many side effects.

Alternative medicine or complementary medicine has become very popular over the years. This type of domestic health care is generating over $22 billion or more a year. Now this says a lot concerning alternative or complementary medicine. We can see that this not something that will come and go in time. Alternative or complementary medicine is used to treat all types of aliments; therefore, operation management in health care organizations that are employed in healthcare facilities will have to learn how to accommodate this growing medical trend. For many people that cannot afford the expensive medications or the high hospital and doctor bills are turning to a cheaper effective approach to alternative or complementary medicine.
